Udaipur, 30 April, 2022: Hindustan Zinc, India’s largest and the world’s leading producer of zinc-lead and silver, has concluded a large-scale immunization awareness programme to celebrate World Immunization Week 2022. Organised together with partner institutions Sewa Mandir, Jatan, Care, and GSVS under the purview of the company’s Khushi project, the campaign sought to raise awareness about the importance of immunization among the residents of six districts of Rajasthan.
Infectious diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhoea are among the leading causes of the alarmingly high child mortality and morbidity rates in India. Nearly one million children in the country die before they attain the age of five. A plethora of studies have conclusively proven immunization is among the most efficient and cost-effective safeguards against such diseases. Unfortunately, over half of the world’s most vulnerable children lack access to the vaccines they need to lead a healthy life. Seeking to correct this situation, the government of India launched ‘Mission Indradhanush’ — the world’s largest immunisation programme in terms of number of beneficiaries, geographical coverage, and vaccine quantities used. Hindustan Zinc, in collaboration with the Deepak Foundation and the Wockhardt Foundation, partook in this mission from 25 to 30 April, when a team of Mobile Health Units (MHUs) helped deliver vaccination centres at Anganwadi centres in Zawar, Dariba, Debari, Kayad, Pantnagar, Chanderiya, and Agucha.
Hindustan Zinc also organised awareness sessions across all Rajasthan-based Nandghars and Anganwadi centres, including the ones in the vicinity of three Hindustan Zinc locations, namely, Dariba (total beneficiaries: 275 people), Kayad (total beneficiaries: 190 people), and Debari (total beneficiaries: 290 people). During the week-long drive, Hindustan Zinc raised awareness about the subject via home visits to educate pregnant women as well as parents of eligible children about how vaccinations help protect people against various diseases, how vaccines are administered during pregnancy, and how a gap between doses must be maintained to help build immunity. The session was followed by HB check-ups and weight monitoring of ANCs (Antenatal Care), PNCs (Post Natal Care), lactating mothers, and children between the age of zero to five years.
The company also provided support to para workers and service providers to deliver scheduled vaccinations.
Besides that, Hindustan Zinc organised other meetings and quizzes across villages to further spread awareness about the importance of immunizations. ANMs (Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery), ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) coordinators, BPMs (block project managers), BCMOs (block chief medical officers) and RCHOs (reproductive and child health officers) were also invited to these meetings to help identify gaps in the immunization process for children and pregnant women. An educative video about immunization and various health issues arising from the lack of proper vaccinations along with case studies were also shared with the local communities.
HZL’s Khushi teams from all six districts were also a part of Maternal and Child Health Nutrition (MCHN) sessions, where the teams assisted the mobilisation of beneficiaries against the due list, with a focus on left-outs and dropouts. The sessions also offered counselling on various other related topics such as ensuring proper ANC (Antenatal Care) of pregnant women, monitoring new-born children’s growth, referring SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) children to MTC (Malnourishment Treatment Centre), etc.
