Directorate General of Mines Safety Commends Hindustan Zinc at All India Mine Safety Award for Safety Excellence

Udaipur, 05th August: Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer has been awarded multiple recognitions by Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) for its commitment to safe operations at the All India Mine Safety Awards. The event, organized under the aegis of DGMS in Kolkata, saw participation from 45 companies including metal, coal, oil & gas sectors. The company’s Rampura Agucha Mine (1st prize), Sindesar Khurd Mine (2nd prize) and Baroi (3rd prize – a part of Zawar Group of Mines), were awarded in the Below Ground Metal Mine Category.

Powered by technological advancements such as Industry 4.0, digitalization, robotics, and automation, Hindustan Zinc is eliminating manual labour and advancing safety across its operations. Few of those initiatives are –

  • Tele-Remote Drilling: It helps in enhancing safety by allowing operators to control drilling equipment from surface, reducing physical exposure to machines
  • Simulator Training for Remote Drilling & Loading: It provides realistic training to operators to master remote drilling & loading, ultimately leading to improved skill and safety
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence/Internet of Things to Track Movement in Underground Mines: Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things helps in real-time monitoring of vehicles and employees in underground mine operations, reducing man machine interaction for smooth operations
  • Robotic Arms: The deployment of robotic arms for metal stacking significantly reduces human exposure and enhances operational efficiency
  • Ingot Handling: Automated ingot handling reduces the risk of injuries associated with heavy lifting thus enhancing workplace safety and reducing manual intervention

Hindustan Zinc’s robust safety protocols, real-time monitoring systems, automated safety procedures, and comprehensive training programs are a testament to the company’s safety-first culture. Prabhat Kumar, Director General – DGMS, and lauded the exemplary arrangements by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Coal India Limited (CIL). A notable highlight of the event was the appreciation garnered by India’s first all-women underground mine rescue team formed by Hindustan Zinc by Director General DGMS and other dignitaries. This recognition marks a significant milestone in promoting gender diversity and empowerment in the mining sector.

Hindustan Zinc also demonstrated its safety protocols at the Safety Stall, under the guidance of Kishore Kumar, IBU-CEO, Rampura Agucha Cluster, earning the top position in the Safety Stall Demonstration category. The company’s safety initiatives have been awarded on national and international level with accolades like British Safety Council’s Sword of Honour, RoSPA Silver Award and 5 Star Rating by Indian Bureau of Mines.
