Udaipur, 22nd March 2024 – Nestled amidst the breathtaking Aravalli Hills, #ZincCity – Udaipur has always been hailed as a city of unparalleled beauty, drawing visitors from around the globe to its cherished lakes and palaces. However, the escalating influx of sewage was threatening to tarnish its natural allure, causing a surge in pollution levels in Udaipur’s iconic water bodies. In collaboration with the Government of Rajasthan, the company pioneered the establishment of Udaipur’s 1st Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), implemented in 2014 under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model.
This initiative swiftly addressed the sewage issue, with STP boasting a capacity to process an impressive 60 million liters per day (MLD). By utilizing the treated water from the STP in its operations, Hindustan Zinc also significantly reduced freshwater reliance by approximately 36%, conserving precious potable water and effectively safeguarding the environment. The STP project aligns seamlessly with the government’s vision of transforming Udaipur into a smart city and contributes significantly to tourism and economic growth.
In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 6, Hindustan Zinc aims to achieve five times water positivity by 2025. The company’s dedication to environmental stewardship has garnered global recognition, with CDP awarding it the Leadership Band (A-) for Climate Change and Water Security Excellence. Also, the company is leading globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, 2023.
