Climate Change

Goals
  • 0.5 million tC02 GHG emission savings in our operations by 2025
  • Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner
  • Reduction in non-GHG emission (SOx and NOx emission) by 17% by 2025
Progress Status
  • 0.40 million tC02 GHG emission savings achieved
  • 15% emission intensity decrease from FY 2019-20
  • Achieved GHG emission reduction of 19,200 tC02 by utilizing biomass for firing/power generation
Key Actions:
  • 40.42 MW Captive solar plant
  • Power delivery agreement (PDA) signed for 530 MW Renewable Energy Round the Clock (RE-RTCs). Received 307 Million Units of RE power in FY2025 from the PDA
  • 100% RE power consumption at Pantnagar Metal Plant
  • All units are ISO 50001 certified
  • Improvement in current efficiency of cell house
  • Shifting from HSD based vehicle to Electrical Vehicle in underground Mine- - MoU with global manufacturers for BEVs

    1. By deploying 10 electric vehicle (EV) trucks, under a contract with Inland EV Green Services Pvt Ltd., with each truck having a capacity of 55 metric tonnes, to facilitate inter-unit transportation of concentrate resulting in the reduction of scope 3 emissions
    2. By signing a contract with Greenline, a subsidiary of Essar Group, for 180 liquified natural gas (LNG) vehicles, have already been deployed reducing Scope 3 emissions by 1066 TCO2e

Water Stewardship

Goals
  • Become 5x waterpositive Company and achieve 25% reduction in freshwater by 2025
  • Complete transition from wet tailing to dry tailing disposal by 2025
Progress Status
  • Achieved 3.32 times water positivity at Hindustan Zinc
  • 6% reduction in freshwater consumption from FY2020
  • Dry tailing plant commissioned at Zawar and RA mines, Commissioning of combined paste-fill and dry tailing plant at RD &SK mine
Key Actions:
  • Commissioning of Dry Tailing Plant (DTP)
  • Utilisation of Municipal sewage treated water
  • Maintaining zero discharge across sites
  • Water recycling through integrated wastewater treatment facilities ETP/RO/MEE/MVR plants
  • Rainwater harvesting interventions, 8.7 MCM/Annum groundwater recharge potential intervention at RAM

Circular Economy

Goals

3x increase in gainful utilisation of smelting process waste by 2025

Progress Status
  • 100% fly ash usage
  • 2x increase in gainful utilisation of smelting process waste from baseline 2020 (over 6 lakhs tonne of gainful utilisation of smelting process waste in FY25)
Key Actions:
  • 100% utilisation of jarosite in cement from Debari Zinc Smelter
  • Completed the commissioning of the 1st fumer at CLZS to convert jarosite to more valuable and useful product
  • Jarofix utilisation in road construction
  • Metal recovery from waste
  • Recovery of Sodium Sulphate from effluent stream at ZSD & DSC
  • Establishment of an Integrated Minor Metals Complex (IMMC) at Chanderiya with the partnership with Runaya Green Tech Pvt. Limited to further maximize our potential of metal recovery with waste by cutting edge innovative technologies and solutions

Biodiversity Conservation

Goals

Protect and enhance biodiversity throughout the life cycle

Progress Status
  • 0.74 million as part of commitment to plant 1 million trees by 2025, 70,000 planted in FY 2024-25
  • Engagement with IUCN to revise Biodiversity Management Plan with an objective of achieving No Net loss
Key Actions:
  • Implementation of Schedule 1 conservation plan in progress at Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter (CLZS), Rajpura Dariba Complex (RDC), & Zawar Mine (ZM)
  • Three years engagement with IUCN for the development of Biodiversity Management Plant focusing on No Net Loss Approach

Social Impact

Goals

Positively impacting 1 million lives through social, economic and environmental initiatives by 2025

Progress Status

Impacted over 2.3 million lives across 3000+ villages with sustained and systematic CSR interventions

Key Actions:
  • 0.41 million women and children benefited through women empowerment, education and strengthening rural infrastructures initiatives includes Sakhi, Nand Ghar, Child Care Centres, Shiksha Sambal, Unchi Udaan, Jeevan Tarang, Scholarships for Promotion of Higher Education, Company-run Schools
  • - 6.56 million beneficiaries skilled through sustainable livelihood programs such as Samadhan, Sakhi, Microenterprises, Zinc Kaushal
  • Improving quality of life of communities including the lifecycle approach in education sphere and developing model villages
  • Promoting community-led microenterprises - INR 9.22 Cr in Revenue. 44% y-o-y increase in revenue.
  • Journey towards Climate strong practices - 9k shareholders crossed with INR 1 Cr in Share capital in Farmer Companies. 20k Farmers reached thru climate strong practices. 35 Acres coverage under Bio-Fortified crops at Zawar

Diversity at Workplace

Goals

Inclusive and diverse workplace with 30% diversity by 2025

Progress Status
  • 25.5% diversity (versus 14.39% in FY 2019-20)
  • 42 people from LGBTQ community introduced in workforce
Key Actions:
  • Improving diversity - gender, sexual orientation, specially-abled, regional diversity - Transgenders onboarded in front end role (16 nos.)
  • Rolled out various women professional development programmes (Winspire, Ambavgarh Dialogue etc.)
  • Talent development program (V-desire, Business and technical ACT-UP, Shikhar, Accelerator, TRC, Women Leadership Development Program in partnership with Gallup.)
  • Introduction of Progressive Parenthood Policies include flexible working hours for expecting mothers, sabbatical leave with an option for flexible working hours and career assurance that protects performance ratings during maternity leave.
  • Adoption leaves to new parents including LGBTQIA+ and single parents, maternity leave and paternity leave, medical insurance coverage and crèche facility at each location

Responsible Sourcing

Goals

100% responsible sourcing in the supply chain by 2025

Progress Status
  • 95% of total supplier by value (total 378 suppliers) have been assessed by third party for sustainable sourcing and ESG criteria during the FY 2024-25
  • Local procurement policy & framework under development
  • Business partner selection criteria on ESG, carbon pricing in commercial decision
Key Actions:
  • Incorporated ESG into the commercial process through Suppliers' due diligence programme and Code of Conduct adherence
  • Standard ESG expectations incorporated in the contracts
  • Incorporated single-use plastic and Modern Slavery Act declaration in RFQ process
  • Grievance redressal through portal
  • Conducted webinar for various ESG topics, including training sessions on sustainability disclosures

Climate Change & Decarbonisation : Accelerate mitigation and adaptation measures to achieve:

  • 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
  • 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions
  • Achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier

Circular Economy & Material Stewardship : Aiming to achieve near to Zero waste to landfill by diverting all smelting process waste away from landfill through reuse, recycling and recovery

Water Stewardship :

  • Achieve 50% reduction in freshwater consumption in operations, thereby contributing to increased freshwater availability for communities within the shared watershed
  • Secure 100% low-quality water for smelting operations
  • Engage with supply chain partners to assess and manage water footprint in water-stressed area

Responsible Sourcing :

  • 100% active supplier evaluation on ESG & Risk Management
  • Achieve 25% of total procurement spend from local business partners (includes contracting & sub-contracting spend) from base year 2025
  • Transition to greener fuels for advancing Scope 3 emission reduction

Biodiversity Conservation :

  • Halting and reversing biodiversity loss, through measurable gains in the health, abundance, diversity and resilience of species, ecosystems, and natural processes
  • Plan and strive to achieve no net loss of biodiversity at all mine sites by closure through application of mitigation hierarchy

Ensuring Zero Harm : Contribute to reach Zero Fatality and 100% elimination of high consequence work-related injuries

Diversity & Inclusion :Increase gender diversity to 30% with a strong focus on decision-making roles, to foster an inclusive and diverse workplace

Social Impact :

  • Complete Social and Human Rights Impact Assessment (SHRIA) at all major sites and implement site-specific Social and Human Rights Management Plans (SHRMPs) to respect human rights, support vulnerable communities, and promote inclusive growth
